Soldier piles may be drilled or driven into place. In many cases, a hole is drilled, and the soldier piles are set into the hole. In this case, concrete or grout may be poured to fasten the bottom of the pile into the soil below foundation level. The soil in the hole above foundation level may be backfilled with soil or with lean, low-strength concrete, easy to chip away later, when lagging must be placed. Sometimes, holes are drilled for each soldier pile using an auger, but the soil is not removed from the hole. Predrilling makes it easier to drive the soldier piles vertically.
